The South China Morning Post Chooses QuadTech

Sussex, WI--November 2006--The South China Morning Post, based in Hong Kong, China, has installed anciliary press controls from QuadTech® to capitalize on the flexibility and color capacity of its new MAN Regioman press. A QuadTech® Register Guidance System with MultiCam® will control register on each of four 4-high printing towers. A QuadTech® Ribbon Control System with MultiCam® will provide extra accuracy for the double folder. The systems are fully integrated using QuadTech’s ICON™ platform, which allows control from a single user interface.

Apart from printing its flagship newspaper The South China Morning Post, which has been published since 1903, the company offers a full printing service, undertaking many contract jobs. Herman Lo, Director, Operations at SCMP, comments, “Since we printed our first colour issue in 1986, the importance of colour has risen dramatically. Quality and consistency are paramount in terms of building and maintaining our client base. With the increase in colour advertising, both in our own products and those that we are contracted to print, clients are demanding higher standards than ever, hence the need for sophisticated ancillary press controls.”

The QuadTech equipment is also helping SCMP meet the challenges of current trends in newspaper printing. Mr. Lo comments, “The focus today is on press utilization. If it was possible, we would like to fill the press 24/7, but this brings its own problems in terms of the number of job changes we need to manage.

“The need to keep waste low, in terms of time as well as paper, during repeated job changeovers heavily influenced us to invest in QuadTech controls. Because the MultiCam recognizes register marks so quickly, significant savings are made during press makeready. This translates into greater productivity with utilization levels higher than ever.”

Apart from product performance, the strength of the QuadTech brand and the support in the Far East also helped The South China Morning Post to invest in its equipment

“Many Asian newspaper companies use QuadTech ancillaries on their presses. The company has established a solid reputation for quality in our region. The technical support and after sales service is also very professional, giving us peace of mind.”

With a daily circulation of 120,000 copies and 85,000 copies for the Sunday edition, The South China Morning Post is by far the largest English language newspaper in Hong Kong. “English is the language of the business community in Hong Kong. We can’t afford to be late ‘on the streets’, so reliability and product back up are almost as important as the precision in color we now get from our new press,” concludes Mr Lo.
