Diligent Media Chooses QuadTech Equipment as Indian Newspaper Market Expands

Sussex, WI--March 2006--Prinovis, a rotogravure joint venture between media services giant arvato Bertelsmann and two of Germany’s largest publishing companies Gruner + Jahr and Axel Springer, has ordered four QuadTech® Autotron™ Gravure 2200 Register Guidance Systems for the first presses going into its new state-of-the-art super-plant in Liverpool, UK.

As part of a record number of orders over a 12-month period for QuadTech equipment, Diligent Media has taken six QuadTech® Autotron™ 2800 systems, which were installed on the company’s Manugraph Hiline presses in June 2005. Diligent Media produce eminent daily national newspapers in three different languages: Dainik Bhaskar (Hindi, 2.8 million copies per day), DNA (English, 0.29 million copies a day) and Divya Bhaskar (Gujarati, 1.2 million copies per day).

Diligent Media has also recently launched DNA, spearheading the current trend of regional language newspapers branching into the English language market.

Mr. Bhatnagar, Vice President Projects & Technical at Diligent Media, comments, “We see ourselves as pioneers in terms of the Indian newspaper industry. We were among the first to introduce color into newspapers in 1991, at a time when it was almost unheard of in India. As technology advanced, we rightly predicted that color in newspaper would one day be commonplace in this country.”

Mr. Bhatnagar continues, “In the same way, we see QuadTech as a breaking new ground in its field. The company is consistently improving its equipment, pushing the boundaries of what is possible. This dedication to quality assures me that the QuadTech name on our equipment guarantees a high standard for the publications we produce. QuadTech makes a significant contribution to our business, helping us improve the quality of our products as we drive the competition in English language newspapers for the benefit of our readers and advertisers.”

With the battle for readers sparking a price war, Indian newspapers currently rely on advertising revenues for the bulk of their profits. Maintaining quality control has become imperative in developing a brand that will attract potential advertisers.

Mr. Bhatnager is well aware of this: “The high standards of print facilitated by the Autotron™ Newspaper 2800 systems is pivotal in attracting lucrative advertising deals. The QuadTech equipment has optimized the performance of our presses in terms of print quality and its color-to-color registration is unsurpassed.”

Color is another important element in making more money from advertising. An increase in the number of color pages has meant that there is greater potential for profit to be generated from color advertising. The Autotron™ Newspaper 2800 maximizes this potential by enabling color to be added without installing additional press units. This is achieved by the accurate insetting of pre-printed color rolls into mono units.

Diligent Media seems set to be active in the Indian newspaper war for some time. If DNA takes off, it is highly likely to launch editions in other parts of the country, eating into the market share of the traditional English language newspapers.

Mr. Bhatnagar concludes: “We are an extremely ambitious company and are always looking to expand. We have serious intensions of launching magazines as well as a daily financial newspaper in English. However, we will not forget our roots. Money generated from the English language newspaper will be invested into launching new editions of Dainik Bhaskar in different regions. We are certain that Manugraph and QuadTech will be an integral part of these long term plans.”

The QuadTech equipment was sold through Manugraph India Ltd, the leading supplier of web offset technology in the country. “We have a very close relationship with Manugraph,” states David Barton, Director of Sales for QuadTech. “The modularity of our register technology enables Manugraph to configure a press just before it leaves their factory—the ideal scenario for a rapidly changing market.”
