QuadTech at Drupa – the passion gets stronger

Hall 6, D61

Sussex, WI--March 2004--QuadTech® Inc., a division of Quad/Graphics, will be a key exhibitor in the heart of PrintCity, Hall 6, at Drupa 2004, with a new extended and stronger product portfolio of ancillary press controls for web printers.

For the first time since acquiring PressTech Controls, QuadTech will be showing new and existing products across an expanded marketplace, covering Publications Gravure, Commercial Web Offset, Newspaper and Packaging printers.

The benefits to the customers in each of these market segments will be drawn together under QuadTech’s new branding, underlined by the tagline, ‘Our Passion is Your Success’. This reflects the company’s enthusiasm and dedication to the success of its customers, achieved through the development of products and services designed specifically to provide a positive impact on ‘bottom line’ performance.

Commercial Printers and Newspapers

New QuadTech Data Central

Data Central® answers the need for improved workflow through JDF-enabled systems and controls. It is a sophisticated software product, designed specifically to enhance press productivity. Overlaying the control provided by other QuadTech ICON™-based products, it provides automatic configuration as well as sophisticated statistics and reports on press performance and optimization.

Data Central has been designed to be modular, so that it can expand in line with future needs. The first two modules, which can be purchased singly or together, have been defined as follows:

Automated set up module – using industry standard data formats, as defined by CIP3 and JDF/CIP4, Data Central automates the set up of individual QuadTech products, delivering reduced press makeready times and cost savings. This is achieved by integrating information from ‘upstream’ processes such as page layout, platemaking and page imposition.

Performance reporting module – provides invaluable measurements of press performance, enabling operators to improve the efficiency of their processes. This can make a considerable impact on pressroom profitability and improves customer satisfaction through reduced turnaround times. In addition, Data Central provides a detailed quality record for every job, so that unsatisfactory signatures can be identified and removed, or accurate rebates calculated in relation to spoilt copies.

New QuadTech Color Control System™

QuadTech® is migrating the successful QuadTech Color Control System™ (CCS) onto its new ICON™ platform. This platform allows multiple QuadTech products to integrate seamlessly.

CCS eliminates the need for subjective judgment of color during web offset press runs. Reading micro color bars at full press speed, it provides real-time information to control color accuracy, such as CMYK ink densities, while displaying important print attributes such as print contrast, trap and dot gain. CCS with Instrument Flight®, (CCS/I.F.) developed through a strategic partnership with color specialists System Brunner, provides automated 3-color and midtone gray balance control.

The new ICON-based CCS improves further on its predecessor’s performance by accessing the same advanced features through an interface that is already familiar to press crews. New features have been added to make it more efficient. These include simultaneous set-up of jobs, allowing fine adjustments during closed-loop operation, enhanced support for special colors and an improved package that adds several new reporting features.

QuadTech Register Guidance System with Vector

QuadTech’s RGS Vector® is a high-speed, color-to-color register control, which captures data from a moving web at speeds up to 3,500 feet per minute (17,8 meters per second). The advanced design allows it to quickly lock-on to register marks and maintain lock-on during tension upsets, press speed changes and reel splices, saving makeready time.

The system features small diamond shaped register marks, which results in less white space requirements and flexible page formats.

QuadTech Autotron 2400

The QuadTech Autotron 2400™ is a total system that provides fully automatic control over every key registration parameter, including color length and sidelay, fit and tilt, front-to-back, folder, and ribbon sidelay. The result is hands free waste minimization, to help commercial printers remain competitive on all types of work from publications to advertising inserts.

Packaging and Publications Gravure Printers

New QuadTech Autotron Packaging 2600 register control system

QuadTech® has enhanced the PressTech Autotron 2600 register system for packaging applications through the development of a number of new MiniCam™ 625 miniature scanning head options, each suitable for different printing environments.

Already proven as the complete register control system for large-scale packaging printers, with thousands of installations worldwide, the latest version of the QuadTech Autotron Packaging 2600® has been developed to provide the same benefits for a wider market. The excellent accuracy of registration, for which Autotron is renowned, is now augmented by additional benefits of modularity, flexibility and cost-effectiveness, making it suitable for use across the widest range of a gravure packaging applications.

With nine different QuadTech MiniCam™ heads, the need to use expensive ‘universal’ scanning head technology has been minimized. Many customers will need only one or two of the new head types to cover their range of work. At a significantly lower price compared with the top-of-the-range alternative, this gives dramatic cost savings and ROI.

When combined with the Autotron’s unique control algorithms, the new QuadTech MiniCam 625 heads provide optimum control at all critical phases of press operation, delivering minimum start-up time, maximum waste-saving and the highest print quality. Further benefits for packaging printers are derived from a ‘low-contrast lock-on’ feature, which enables the heads to work with very low-contrast marks encountered in the printing of packaging and decorative materials.

New QuadTech Heliostat

QuadTech® will show the latest version of its Electrostatic Assist (ESA) system used extensively by gravure printers of publication and packaging products.

The new QuadTech Heliostat™ uses carbon fiber brushes to electrostatically charge the impression roller of a gravure press. This facilitates the transfer of ink to the paper, reducing ‘speckling’ and dot skip. New features reflect the trends in the gravure industry towards wider web widths, lower runs and higher expectations in print quality.

To accommodate wider webs, up to 4.2 meters, the new Heliostat has redesigned power supplies, including a 6kV version that gives exceptional ink transfer of water-based inks.

Faster job changes are provided by centralized control at the press desk with an easy-to-use Windows® interface, and a new function that allows job pre-set up.

In addition, an option to make the brush assemblies oscillate across the impression cylinder, gives further improvements in print quality and consistency by delivering a more even charge and eliminating streaking.

“As part of our new branding program, we identified that our customers wanted integrated and automated solutions to give them a competitive advantage,” states Sharon Quint, Director of Marketing. “Our new drupa products not only deliver this requirement, but also move QuadTech® one step further towards its future vision, The Lights Out™ pressroom.

The Lights Out concept underlines our passion to turn printing into a process in which there are no bottlenecks, ambiguities, inconsistencies or unknowns. This approach will give dramatic workflow benefits and waste savings – major contributors to competitive advantage and the success of our customers.”
